Librarian
Mr Lawrence Chikwanha joined Great Zimbabwe University from the Chinhoyi University of Technology in January 2007. He became the second substantive
GZU Librarian after Mrs Judith Mavodza who had a short stint with the University in 2005. Mr. Chikwanha started his career in librarianship in 1991 at the Ministry of Finance where he worked as a Librarian before embarking on a career of academic librarianship that saw him work at a number of university libraries among them National University of Science and Technology, Africa University and Chinhoyi University of Technology.
Apart from his vast experience gained from a number of libraries that he has worked for, Mr. Chikwanha has also played a pivotal role in the promotion and development of the library profession. During his stint with Africa University,Mr. Chikwanha and spearheaded the revival of the Manicaland Branch of the Zimbabwe Library Association (ZimLA), which he chaired between 1999 and 2000. This ensued his ticket to the ZimLA National Council and ultimately in 2001, he was elected National Chairman of ZimLA , a position he held until 2003. Mr. Chikwanha also actively participated in the formation of the vibrant Zimbabwe University Libraries Consortium (ZULC) in 2003 and has served as the ZULC Secretary for a number of terms.
His vision is to gear GZU Library to be a unique culturally and developmentally oriented information resource facility buttressed by modern technology so that it can provide access to appropriate and modern information resources that support quality learning, teaching and research service needs of its community and other stakeholders
Mr. Chikwanha’s research interests are in agricultural information, information needs assessments and library technical services. He also has a passion for school libraries and has hosted a number of training workshops for school librarians and teacher librarians.
